Odisha Governor Dr Hari Babu Kambhampati on Friday called for greater awareness about thalassemia and suggested that the Indian Red Cross Society, Odisha State Branch (IRCS-OSB), undertake sustained awareness initiatives to help identify cases that may be going unnoticed.
Addressing the Executive Committee meeting of the IRCS-OSB at the Conference Room of the New Abhishek Hall at Lok Bhavan here, the Governor stressed the need for sustained awareness campaigns in view of the rising number of thalassemia patients and the possibility of undetected cases.
Kambhampati also suggested that the state branch approach corporate organisations with proposals for its activities and seek support under corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives. He urged the executive body to hold its meetings at least three times a year for regular review and follow-up of its activities.
Expressing satisfaction over the functioning of the Red Cross in Odisha, the Governor suggested organising training programmes for volunteers engaged in geriatric care, subject to necessary government approval. He also suggested seeking support from the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment for the initiative.
The Governor said the Indian Red Cross Society symbolises the spirit of selfless service to humanity and plays an important role in alleviating suffering, protecting life and supporting people in times of need. He appreciated the Odisha State Branch for its humanitarian, healthcare and community welfare initiatives and stressed the need to further strengthen the Red Cross movement in the state.
He also called for greater participation of youth and volunteers and emphasised ensuring that Red Cross services reach those who need them most.
Honorary Secretary Ganesh Chandra Patra made the presentation on the activities of the IRCS-OSB.
Senior officials from the Health and Family Welfare, Higher Education, and Panchayati Raj and Drinking Water departments, along with members of the IRCS-OSB Executive Committee and senior officials of other concerned departments, attended the meeting.
