The Social Security and Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (SSEPD) Department, Government of Odisha, organised the national short film festival ‘Samarthya 2026’ at the MMIT Auditorium in Bhubaneswar on Saturday.
The festival celebrated the talent, confidence and achievements of persons with disabilities through cinema, with a focus on stories of resilience, success and positive contributions to society. Unlike earlier editions that primarily emphasised disability awareness, this year’s festival sought to challenge stereotypes and highlight empowerment.
A total of 62 films were received from across the country, including 20 national and 42 regional entries. Following a two-stage evaluation by RR Events and Cine Production, 38 films were shortlisted for final screening. Each film was limited to five minutes and featured accessibility provisions such as audio description and sign language.
Veteran cinematographer Jugal Debata headed the jury, along with Tripura Mishra and disability rights activist Jitendra Biswal.
In the National Category, Tune of Life and Medal jointly won Best Film, while A Little Big Dream received the Panel Expert Committee award for Best Film. Plea won Best Story/Screenplay and Best Actress.
In the Odia Category, Antardrashti and Leak jointly won Best Film, with Leak securing multiple awards.
Bhubaneswar Mayor Sulochana Das, SSEPD officials, actress and festival Brand Ambassador Sheetal Patra, artists, social workers and students attended the event.
