The Directorate of Horticulture, Government of Odisha, observed Teachers’ Day with a statewide Horticulture Outreach Programme across all 30 districts, reaching more than 26,900 college students from over 220 institutions.

The initiative aimed to connect academic learning with practical agricultural opportunities while encouraging youth towards agricultural entrepreneurship, technical skill development and rural employment. Field-level officials, including Deputy Directors, Assistant Directors, Assistant Horticulture Officers and Assistant Agriculture Engineers, interacted directly with students during the programme.

Considering Odisha’s diverse agro-climatic potential, the Directorate highlighted horticulture as an important avenue for increasing farm incomes and promoting agricultural diversification. Students were introduced to opportunities in protected cultivation, mushroom farming, beekeeping, post-harvest management, value addition and market linkages, along with area expansion and quality production.

The programme sought to equip young people with practical knowledge and encourage them to explore self-employment and agritech ventures, thereby supporting sustainable agricultural growth and youth-led economic development across Odisha.
