IIM Sambalpur Welcomes the 8th Batch of PhD and 7th Batch of PhD–Working Professionals

Paperman Media ( Sambalpur )- The Indian Institute of Management Sambalpur (IIM Sambalpur), one of India's premier management institutions, welcomed the 8th Batch of its PhD Programme and the 7th Batch of its PhD–Working Professionals (PhD-WP) Programme with an inspiring induction ceremony held on campus. The new cohort comprises 9 scholars in the PhD Programme and 23 scholars in the PhD-WP Programme from Ericsson India Pvt Ltd, Blueyonder, IMS Unison University, Neurealm, PwC, Accenture  etc , embarking on a journey of academic excellence, research, and innovation.

Welcoming the scholars, Prof. Mahadeo Jaiswal, Director, IIM Sambalpur, highlighted the critical role of research and innovation in shaping India's future as a developed nation. He noted that while India is now the world's fourth-largest economy with a GDP of approximately USD 4.5 trillion, sustained growth depends on creating globally recognized innovations and brands through Innovation driven Industries.

Drawing inspiration from Stephen Hawking's The Grand Design, Prof. Jaiswal emphasized the limitless nature of knowledge and encouraged scholars to pursue research with curiosity, critical thinking, and a commitment to solving complex societal and business challenges. Referring to Adam Smith's concept of the division of labour, he explained the progression from Technical skills (L1) and Business functional skills (L2) to Innovation commercialisation skills (L3), stressing that true wealth creation emerge at the L3 level skills. He cited the example of developed economies such as South Korea, where innovation-driven growth has significantly enhanced productivity and per capita income.

The keynote address was delivered by Prof. H. Raghav Rao, Co-Editor-in-Chief of Information Systems Frontiers and Professor at the University of Texas at San Antonio, USA. He encouraged scholars to pursue impactful and meaningful research by exploring six major research streams, identifying emerging and niche areas, and moving beyond conventional "gap-spotting" to “problematization”, where researchers challenge existing assumptions to generate original knowledge and scholarly contributions.

The induction programme also featured insightful addresses by Prof. Janat Shah, Former Director, IIM Udaipur, and Prof. Madhu Viswanathan, Research Director, ISB Hyderabad. Both eminent academicians welcomed the new scholars and shared valuable perspectives on the importance of research, innovation, interdisciplinary collaboration, and ethical scholarship in addressing contemporary business and societal challenges.
