Minister for Housing & Urban Development, Government of Odisha, Dr Krushna chandra Mahapatra today chaired a high-level review meeting to assess the progress of various projects and activities being undertaken by the Water Corporation of Odisha (WATCO). The meeting was held at the Conference Hall on the second floor of Unnati Bhawan, Bhubaneswar.
The Managing Director, WATCO,Debabrata Mohanty presented a detailed presentation on the corporation’s operational jurisdiction, ongoing water supply and sewerage projects, and the status of Water Treatment Plants (WTPs) and Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs). The review covered the physical and financial progress of major projects, expenditure against budgetary provisions, project timelines, and measures required for timely completion of ongoing works.
The Minister Dr Mahapatra reviewed the status of water supply infrastructure and sewerage projects, with emphasis on ensuring timely implementation, effective utilisation of funds and improved service delivery to citizens. The functioning and progress of WTPs and STPs were also discussed, along with issues relating to project execution and operational requirements.
Financial performance of WATCO was another important area of discussion. The meeting examined budget allocations, expenditure and the pace of financial utilisation across different projects. The need for close monitoring of project-wise expenditure and timely resolution of implementation-related issues was emphasised to ensure that approved projects progress as scheduled.
The meeting also deliberated on arrangements for the taking over and handing over of the newly constituted Notified Area Councils (NACs) falling under WATCO’s jurisdiction. The proposed transfer of sewerage works from WATCO to the Odisha Water Supply and Sewerage Board (OWSSB) was discussed in accordance with Government Notification . The transition process was reviewed with a focus on ensuring clarity of responsibilities and continuity of services during the handover.
The meeting further reviewed WATCO’s planned Information, Education and Communication (IEC) activities under the SUJAL scheme, scheduled to be conducted from October 2 to October 16, 2026. The campaign will focus on creating greater public awareness about water supply services, responsible water use, service-related practices and citizen participation. The importance of effective communication and public outreach for improving awareness and strengthening citizen engagement was also discussed.
Minister Dr Mahapatra directed that ongoing projects and associated activities be closely monitored, with due emphasis on timely execution, financial discipline, quality of works and effective delivery of services to citizens. The concerned officials were advised to ensure better coordination among implementing agencies and address bottlenecks promptly.
