Students of English Journalism, Odia Journalism and Media & Communication Governance from the Eastern Regional Campus of the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC), Dhenkanal, visited the Odisha Legislative Assembly in Bhubaneswar on Friday and witnessed the proceedings of the House.
Accompanied by faculty members, the students had an opportunity to gain first-hand exposure to the functioning of the State Legislature and understand the processes involved in the conduct of Assembly proceedings.
During the visit, the students met and interacted with Hon’ble Deputy Speaker Shri Bhabani Shankar Bhoi, Chief Whip Shri Saroj Kumar Pradhan, Hon’ble MLA from Nilagiri Shri Santosh Kumar Khatua, and Shri Satyabrata Rout, IAS, Secretary, Odisha Legislative Assembly, besides other senior officers of the Assembly.
The students were briefed on the procedures, functioning and various aspects of the legislative process, including the conduct of proceedings and the role of different functionaries of the Assembly. The interaction provided students with valuable insights into legislative reporting, parliamentary journalism, public policy and democratic governance.
The visit was particularly relevant for students of journalism and Media & Communication Governance, as it enabled them to connect their classroom learning with the functioning of a key democratic institution. It also provided an opportunity to understand the importance of accurate, responsible and informed reporting of legislative proceedings.
IIMC Dhenkanal regularly encourages experiential and field-based learning to supplement classroom teaching and provide students with practical exposure to institutions, media organisations and governance processes.
