Vedanta Aluminium’s coal mines in Odisha are strengthening community infrastructure through Project Jyoti, a clean-energy initiative aimed at improving safety, mobility and connectivity in villages across Jharsuguda and Sundargarh districts.
Under the initiative, 406 solar-powered street lights have been installed across 21 villages, benefiting nearly 22,000 residents. The improved lighting has enhanced public spaces and made roads safer and more accessible, particularly for women, senior citizens and daily commuters.
The initiative covers several villages and locations, including Jamkhani, Girisima, Jharpalam, Hemgir, R&R Colony, Beleimunda, Munderkhet, Ghogharpalli, Podajalanga, Rengalpani, Kuraloi, Banjari, Bartap, Grindola, Pipilimal, Liyakhai, Lakhanpur and Belpahar Municipality.
Vedanta Aluminium Coal Mines CEO Amaresh Kumar said reliable lighting is essential for building safer and more connected communities. He added that Project Jyoti is helping improve mobility and access to essential services while promoting clean and sustainable energy solutions.
The company has also established regular monitoring and maintenance mechanisms to ensure the long-term reliability of the solar street lights.
Project Jyoti aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDGs 3, 7, 11 and 13, and forms part of Vedanta Aluminium’s broader community development initiatives benefiting more than two lakh people across 26 villages.
