Corneal Blind Detection Program- 300819

Bhubaneswar-  As part of the national   Eye Donation   Fortnight   which is being held from the  25th of August till 8th September, Drushti  Daan held a Corneal Blind Detection Program at Padanpur in Jatni Block of Khurda district today. The program was flagged off today by Dr. K.C.Padhy, President of Drushti Daan at the Panchayat  Office of Padanpur.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Padhy said that it was the first of its type program in the country where a comprehensive survey of all households will be undertaken for detecting corneal blindness. He said that Drushti Daan id collecting corneas in its eye donation program, but all of these cannot be used in the State in spite of large corneal blind persons. Many of the collected tissues are sent outside the state to other parts of the country. Dr. Sujata Das, Medical Director of the Eye Bank stressed the role of early and timely detection of corneal blindness. She said that  transplantation facilities are readily available, and majority cases of corneal blindness could be cured. 

The Chief District medical officer Dr. B.K.Mahapatra lauded the role of Drushti Daan for eye donation and implored the gathering to sign pledge forms. He said that corneal blindness could be eradicated if proper detection is made. He implored the Asha workers to make house to house surveys for detection of the corneal blind. The Sarpanch of Padanpur, Sukanta Parida, assured all support of the project and ensured that a fool proof survey would be conducted within the next few weeks.

A training program for the Asha workers was held and kits distributed to them. The Padanpur program will be a pilot project in the state and its findings will become a model for a state wide survey in later days.The meeting was attended by many locals  and members of Drushti Daan. 

Till date, Drushti Daan has collected more than 10,500 corneal tissues in the State and after taking care of local requirements, corneas are being sent  to surgeons in other parts of the country so as to ensure that all those needing corneal tissues will benefit.
