We find here temples, monuments, Buddhist, Jainism, forests, wildlife’s, sea and many more. Similarly after the birth of printing machine in Odisha the books and periodicals also published in regular.
Odisha also famous for its newspapers, periodicals. In 1866 Odishas first newspaper published from Cuttack. Before that the missionary people starts publishing here there articles. Children literature is a big part of education as well as character building. So in the year 1909 Reba Ray on social reformer start children magazine at Cuttack for the children. So her “PRABHAT” is the first children magazine of Odisha.
In the year 1918 the second children magazine published from Cuttack by Chintamani Acharya. “PANCHAMRUTA” was very famous in that time. “CHHATRA” was the third children magazine of Odisha by Banamali Patnaik which published in the year 1940. Balakrushna Kar published “JAHNAMAMU” in the year 1941 and this was the fourth children magazine of Odisha. “MO DESHA” was the fifth children magazine of Odisha published by Batakrushna Das in the year 1947. Then in the year 1948 Dr Harekrushna Mahatab published “MEENABAZAR” from Prajatantra press and this is the sixth oldest children magazine of Odisha. And also till date it continues its publication. Now Mahesweta Mahatab is the editor of Meenabazar. The seventh oldest children magazine published from Cuttack in the year 1950 by Ramakrushna Nanda. “SANSAR” still continues its publication. Anasuya Nanda Daughter of Ramakrushna Nanda is the editor of the said magazine.
As reports all most all district there are some children magazine published. From Mayurbhanj to Malakangiri and from Sundergarh to Jagatsinghpur children magazine published. More than 115 children magazine published from Cuttack district. More than 80 children magazine published from Khordha. Late Bijay Kumar Mahapatra from Jagatsingpur published more than 60 languages children newspapers independently.
The lead Odia children magazine is “SUNA BHAUNI”. This published in the year 1992. The others are loving sister, English in the year 1992, Sona Ben, Benglai in the year 1992. He also published the magazines by Hindi, Santhali, Nepali, Malayalam, Marathi, Telgu, Arabi, Urdu, Hindi and many more languages. After his sad demise his wife did not stop the magazine. Now it continues in only in Odia language.
Mr Birendra Samantaray of Palasahi, Khordha and Er Rajkishore Sarangi are two independent researchers about the children magazines. Retired UP school teacher Birendra Samantaray set up a research centre for the same. His Shishu Sahitya Sangrahalaya established in the year 2000 at his village. Er Rajkishore Sarangi established Odisha Sambadapatra and Patrika Sangrahalaya for the same at Berhempur in his work place. Soon his research centre will shift to his home at Puri.
As their research we found 13 childrenmagazine from Koraput, 12 from Rayagada, 3 from Nawarangpur, 4 from Malkangire, 5 from Kalahandi, 9 from Sonepur, 6 from Kandhamal, 13 from Sundergarh, 21 from Bhadrakh, 23 from Balasore, 17 from Mayurbhanj, 17 from Keonjhar, 23 from Bolangir, 12 from Jajpur, 5 from Nayagarh, 13 from Dhenkanal, 7 from Anugul, 2 from Debagarh, 4 from Nuapara etc.
Some children magazines those create a mark at students are Manapabana, Biluanana, Baramaja, Nandankanan, Tuukumusi, Bigyna Madhupa, Shishu Lekha, Baghamamu, Jahnamamu, Tikidunia, Tikikaincha, Shishu Raija, Jaga, Shishu Sudha, Chdiakhana, Shishu Jagata, Sunaphula, Prajapati, Baichadhei, Shishu Bazar, Jhumuka, Shishuprava, Shishu Swapna, Pratiyogee, Bana Kusuma, Ame Kuna Kuni, Kanamamu, Unmesha, Shuasari, Telinguibaza etc.
Kunikatha from the house of Kadambini edited by children editor and Kalamanika edited by Laxmi Swarupa Rath, a small child. And both create history in the field of children literature. Shishu Lekha published by Odisha Government. Once it named as Chandamama of Odisha. But due to some officers irresponsible it stopped the publication.
