He is not a politician or a political activist. But he is a follower of Bharat Ratna late Atal Bihari Vajpayee and his works. After the sad demise of former prime minister of India all most all newspapers of India carried the death news in their page as lead story. Some down the masthead and some were blank their editorial to tribute this great leader. Though his passion is collecting newspapers so he gathered the newspapers in his death news covered. Till today he collected 416 newspapers and magazines. He added the special collection with a theme “ATAL LOSS-A GREAT LOSS FOR NATION”.
Meet 40 years old Shashanka Sekhar Dash of Arangabad Village of Bari Block under Jajpur district of Odisha state. Shashanka popularly known as PAPERMAN INDIA in Odisha. I love Ataljee when I am a small child. When he became prime minister I was so happy. I hope he will remember till the last breath of any Indian. He was three times Prime Minister of India. During his tenure as PM, India did various outstanding job including Kargil War, Pokhran Blast and Bus to Lahore. These activities were making him famous as his poem said Shashanka.

Ataljee died on 16th August 2018. Paperboy Shashanka collected newspapers of 17th August 2018 and 18th August 2018. Then added some other dates newspaper in which articles and news were published about Ataljee. His collection about Ataljee comprises 256 different newspapers of 17th August, 111 different newspapers of 18th August, 55 different newspapers of other dates and 19 magazines of various periodicities. His total collections about Atljee are 450 different newspapers and magazines. These are from 18 Indian states and comprise of 16 languages including tribal language Mizo and Karbi. Along with these newspapers and magazines he collected Books by him, books about him, pictures in matchbox, Mourning cover, 10 rupees notes (Number of notes carries his DOB and DOD). He also applied to receive for the commemorate coin of Ataljee.
Along with this special collection of Ataljee Paperman India collected more than 6500 newspapers. These are of 87 languages and from 90 countries. These are 4214 different titles. For the collection of newspapers earlier Shashanka got recognised from India Book of Records and Limca Book of records. In 2019 he also awarded in Limca Book of records for his special achievement.
Shashanka purchases the newspapers whenever he visited any where then collect newspapers which he does not have in his collection. He also writes directly to newspaper offices for a souvenir copy. Major collection of Shashanka gathered through his friends those stayed at other states and countries. So what Shashanka does is that he puts a sticky note on every newspaper with a brief sketch. He then carefully wraps them in a poly bag and then stores them carefully in shelves and Almirahs. They will then be brought out whenever he has to show them for an inspection or display them for an exhibition, which he already has had a few.
He exhibited his collection so many times in various part of Odisha. He exhibited once at Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC), Dhenkanal, twice at Baripada Municipality, Mayurbhanj and 6 times at Bhubaneswar. More than 20 lakhs people saw his exhibition. His exhibition at IIMC, Birla Global University (BGU), Odisha State Archives and Odisha State Museum is milestone.
Newspaper collection is not a usual hobby, But Shashanka start collection of Newspapers in 2001; hopefully he is the first newspaper collector of world, who collects as an Individual. Now there is some other couple of persons with this passion, although there collection is very small still in comparison to Shashanka’s. With such a long journey already completed, Shashanka doesn’t want to go it as a waste. He now starts a museum and research centre in his father’s name for the same in his village. Dolagobinda Newspaper Musuem and Research centre will help budding journalists and students as well as enthusiastic. May be in couple of years from now, the research centre will run in full fledged. With lot of digitization going on, life of newspapers is getting smaller. With many newspapers closing their editions, this collection will have an eternal value. Shashanka already has many newspapers in his collection which have closed down. Now they are of enormous value. Shashanka has also written six books in Odia which include poems, short stories and also a book on journalistic essays. Khabarakagaja Aneka Katha is the books on newspapers. In the year 1999 he also published Odisha’s first children’s newspaper Shishu Pratiyogee. Soon his edited newspaper fortnightly bi lingual PAPERMAN will publish in Odisha.
